Hemingway Bridge & Etc

Hemingway Verse

Here are videos of me playing mando, so you know what to avoid. I'll also sing your part so you know where that is.

If this is still confusing (and it may well be), please don't hesitate to call any time of day or night. It's better to just get it all figured out so you won't have to waste time learning the wrong stuff. Sorry I didn't make it for the last time!

Hemingway

Austin, I noticed on your practice mp3 that you were actually playing the mandolin part on Hemingway. I have this track without singing that makes it more clear what the guitar does.

Basically, all the down strokes are Mando (that start at the beginning of the song). You start on verse 2 with the 2 and 4 stuff. Then on the bridge I have a melody line, and you play soft chords, then upstrokes and slow arpegios for verse 3 till the end. I've actually never played it, but I don't think its that difficult. If you can't figure whats you and what's me give a call...917.566.9134.

I'll also email you this mp3.

Yes is a Pleasant Country

Unlike the recording, we'll probably do this just guitar and vox on vs 1. then start in with bass and drums on vs 2.

You pretty much play the same thing for all 5 verses at the end, just changing in intensity. I'll come in toward the end.

We'll all have to learn the vocals eventually. They are pretty weird. Does Jake sing?

This is a poem by e.e. cummings

yes is a pleasant country
if's wintry; my lovely let's open the year
both is the very weather, not either
my treasure when violets appear
love is a deeper season than reason, my sweet one
and april's where we're

I don't know what it means but i have a few of my own private theories. You should make up your own.

Strange Flowers

For Strange Flowers I play the riff at the beginning (and throughout the whole song, really) and you start it on the tippy-toe guitar that starts on the second vocal phrase

"something is sprouting leaves and petals"

On the chorus you play the tremolo octave part. Make sure to do the tremolos nice and fast.

Here's the bridge:

I'm not sure what most of the chords are called, but there they are.

After the part of the bridge shown on the video, you play the tippy-toe guitar again and then the tremolo octave part.

I'm going to give you the lyrics and what I think it means. I think it's easier to play a song when you know all about it

Here are the lyrics:

something strange is spreading up inside
in spite of my state and the trouble with me
something is sprouting leaves and petals
while i'm just trying to go to sleep

they found their way

finally all the troubles i tucked under my bed
have decomposed into a nice, rich spring
finally after these years deserted
i'm a fine home for exotic things

that found their way, found their way
strange displays decorate

all the vines and the creepers
are twisted round my fingers
all the vines and the creepers
are twisted round my fingers

who can be scared of various prowlers
when i'm bright green and filling the room with flowers?

Here's the explain:

Sometimes when I'm in bed and can't sleep I have a mental picture of taking the icky or worrying thoughts out of my head and stuffing them under the bed.

One day I realized that I'd been doing this for a long time and that there must be a lot of spongy dirt under there. I envisioned this dirt sprouting very exotic flowers and vines and sprouting up through the bed and winding around me and absorbing me.

It's kind of like how bad things can make you beautiful if you wait long enough.

And then you become (for that moment when they're blooming) very fearless. How can bad things make you afraid when they all turn into flowers?
